Jacob A. Gines, PhD

Editor-in-Chief

Dr. Jacob Gines is the MLMA Endowed Associate Professor of Innovative Wood Construction and Design at Mississippi State University, where he holds a joint appointment in the School of Architecture and the Department of Sustainable Bioproducts. A passionate educator and researcher, Dr. Gines leads upper-level design studios focused on mass timber architecture, urban housing, and sustainable construction practices.

His research centers on increasing the adoption of bio-based building materials—particularly mass timber—through innovative design, performance analysis, and life cycle assessment. He is a recognized leader in timber education and was awarded the Timber Education Prize from the ACSA and the Softwood Lumber Board for his groundbreaking studio focused on disaster relief and coastal resilience. He also received the AIA Mississippi Education Commendation for his contributions to advancing mass timber pedagogy.

In addition to his academic role, Dr. Gines is an Associate Principal at Method Studio, where he directs the MAD Lab (Method Architecture and Design Laboratory). His professional work integrates research and design to address complex environmental challenges, most recently leading the design of Baltic Pointe—Utah’s first large-scale mass timber commercial office building.

Dr. Gines holds a Master of Architecture from the University of Utah and a Ph.D. in Sustainable Bioproducts from Mississippi State University. His work bridges academia and practice, championing the next generation of sustainable, high-performance architecture.
